They carry guns. They carry grenades. They carry comic books and candy bars and a photo of their girl back home. They carry hope and insect repellant and Bibles; fear, fellowship, funny stories, and sore feet. And when I get shot, they carry me, Tim O’Brien, conscientious objector from Minnesota who is too much of a coward to cross the border and so goes off to war instead in literary novel THE THINGS THEY CARRIED. They carry broken hearts, broken bodies, and broken dreams. But no matter what else they carry, they will always carry Vietnam.
