The Elm at the Edge of the Earth, by Robert D. Hale

SPOILER ALERT

In 1931, eight-year-old David is sent to stay with relatives at the County Home, a sprawling rural campus that houses an odd assortment of eccentric characters in literary novel THE ELM AT THE EDGE OF THE EARTH. A good boy at heart, David enjoys the simple adventures of childhood and befriends the Home’s residents, especially Rose, who has been imprisoned there since killing her abusive husband twenty years prior. David soaks up Rose’s wisdom and is bereft when she dies and he must return home, leaving her spirit to wander alone by the big elm where she hanged herself.
