Literary Novel South of Broad

South of Broad, by Pat Conroy

Fate comes at you cat-footed, unavoidable, and bloodthirsty. For me, Leo King , it arrives camouflaged as a moving van, an orphanage, and a drug bust south of Broad in South Carolina’s Charleston in 1969, the summer before my senior year in high school. In literary novel SOUTH OF BROAD, I bond with terrified and abused teens, my football team’s black co-captain, and a pedigreed Charlestonian couple to form intertwined lifelong friendships that endure the AIDS epidemic, marital infidelities, Hurricane Hugo, and a savage murder. It’s a magical year: the year I come alive, the year I find my worth.
