Chasing Secrets, by Gennifer Choldenko:  

In 1900, bubonic plague comes to San Francisco, resulting in a Chinatown quarantine. Thirteen-year-old Lizzie Kennedy, who prefers assisting her father on medical visits to learning etiquette at finishing school, suddenly finds herself battling political intrigue as she tries to rescue Jing, the family’s Chinese cook, from the quarantine so that he may be reunited with his twelve-year-old son, who is secretly hiding in Lizzie’s home.  Lizzie learns much about love, death, and the need for mutual respect among people of different ethnic backgrounds in young adult novel CHASING SECRETS, lessons she’ll need when she becomes a doctor herself someday.
