Certain sets of words in the English language tend to confuse people. I have found the following to be among them:
CHILDISH / CHILDLIKE
Each of these words encompasses the idea of “like a child,” but their connotations are different. The adjective childish denotes immaturity and carries a negative connotation. The adjective childlike, on the other hand, denotes the innocence and sense of wonderment associated with young children and has a more positive connotation.
PREFERRED CONNOTATION: For a grownup to behave in such a childish manner is most unbecoming.
PREFERRED CONNOTATION: My grandmother’s childlike delight with the birthday party we had planned for her made us feel well rewarded.
