Chasing Secrets, by Gennifer Choldenko
In 1900, bubonic plague comes to San Francisco, resulting in a Chinatown quarantine. Thirteen-year-old Lizzie, who prefers assisting her father on medical visits to learning etiquette at finishing school, soon finds herself battling political intrigue as she tries to rescue Jing, the family’s Chinese cook, from quarantine so that he may be reunited with his twelve-year-old son, who is secretly hiding in Lizzie’s home. Lizzie learns much about love, death, and the need for mutual respect among people of different backgrounds in young adult novel CHASING SECRETS, lessons she’ll need when she becomes a doctor herself someday.
