What begins as a civilized journey across the prairie for these lawmen quickly evolves into a shootout when train robbers terrorize passengers and kidnap two young women. Virgil, a man of few words and precise action, plans and executes the rescue aided by an affable constable/pimp, a bow-and-arrow-toting Choctaw, and Everett, who relates the story. “It’s what we do,” says Virgil. And yes, flesh-and-blood horses play a role, too.
