The Drop, by Michael Connelly:
LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch refuses to neglect his cold case assignment as instructed when handed a “high jingo” likely suicide in series police procedural THE DROP. Parrying nefarious activities both from within and outside the department that threaten to undermine his investigations, Harry resolves the suicide case and follows a new lead concerning the twenty-two-year-old murder of a female college student, resulting in the arrest of a serial killer who proudly admits to thirty-seven murders. It’s a tough case to stomach but changes Harry’s mind about retiring. This, he remembers, is why we do this.
