A Store at War, by Joanna Toye

Marlowe’s department store offers fourteen-year-old salesclerk Lily Collins a means to help her widowed mother financially as well as a chance to make new friends and prove her competence as war rages on in 1941 Midlands, England. Lily reduces hysteria in a bomb shelter, breaks up an illegal delivery ring, and sorts out a romantic relationship for a pregnant coworker in historical novel A STORE AT WAR. She soon gains the respect of both Marlowe’s employer and employees and even inspires romantic notions in a very serious young man. To Lily, friends are family, and family is everything.
