Certain sets of words in the English language tend to confuse people. I have found the following to be among them:
ADVISE / INFORM
The verb advise means give advice; counsel. The verb inform means give information or impart knowledge.
CORRECT: The school’s guidance counselor can inform our son to help him select the best college for him.
ALSO CORRECT: The school’s guidance counselor can advise our son concerning which colleges might be best for him.
INCORRECT: Please advise me of your plans for the weekend.
CORRECT: Please inform me of your plans for the weekend.
